Feeding of feral goats before live export by ship.

چکیده
Feral goats were lot-fed for either 7 or 14 days before a simulated shipping voyage of 20 days, to examine whether period of lot-feeding affected the proportion of goats that ate pelleted feed and the subsequent liveweight changes. During the period from the start of lot-feeding to the completion of the simulated voyage, liveweight losses were similar and underestimated true losses because of the removal of goats which lost more than 20% of their initial liveweight to days 7 or 14 of simulated shipping. Also period of lot-feeding had no effect on either the proportion of non-feeders during the simulated voyage or the proportion of goats that completed the voyage. It was postulated that the failure of the goats to eat in the feedlot was a likely cause for their poor performance. The results of this study suggest that there was no advantage in increasing the period of lot-feeding of feral goats from 7 to 14 days. However, further studies are required to define the optimum period of lot-feeding of feral goats before live export by ship.

Comparison of the Fecal Microbiota in Feral and Domestic Goats
Animals have co-evolved with mutualistic microbial communities, known as the microbiota, which are essential for organ development and function. We hypothesize that modern animal husbandry practices exert an impact on the intestinal microbiota. In this study, we compared the structure of the fecal microbiota between feral and domestic goats using the G2 PhyloChip and assessed the presence of fi...
متن کاملTuberculosis in goats
Tuberculosis (Tb) in goats has always been considered of minor importance in New Zealand, even though the disease has been seen sporadically in feral goats captured. Within the last few years the demand for feral does as embryotransfer recipients and the search for feral cashmere genes have resulted in the extensive capture and distribution of feral goats throughout New Zealand. Many of the cap...
متن کاملDiet of Feral Goats and Feral Pigs on Auckland Island, New Zealand
The diets of feral pigs and feral goats shot on the main Auckland Island in 1989 are described from analyses of stomach and rumen contents. Feral goats ate at least 50 species of plants, but only three, Metrosideros umbellata, Chionochloa antarctica, and Durvillea antarctica made up over 50% by dried weight of the food eaten. Feral pigs ate a mixed plant and animal diet, of which plants made up...
متن کاملHome Range Use and Movement Patterns of Non-Native Feral Goats in a Tropical Island Montane Dry Landscape
Advances in wildlife telemetry and remote sensing technology facilitate studies of broad-scale movements of ungulates in relation to phenological shifts in vegetation. In tropical island dry landscapes, home range use and movements of non-native feral goats (Capra hircus) are largely unknown, yet this information is important to help guide the conservation and restoration of some of the world's...
متن کاملExclusion Performance in Dwarf Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) and Sheep (Ovis orientalis aries)
Using a comparative approach, we investigated the ability of dwarf goats and sheep to use direct and indirect information about the location of a food reward in an object-choice task. Subjects had to choose between two cups with only one covering a reward. Before making a choice, subjects received information about the baited (direct information) or non-baited cup (indirect information). Both g...
